The story of Mont Saint Michel dates back to the 8th century, when the Bishop of Avranches, claimed that Archangel Michel requested him to set up a church on this site. With the settlement of the Benedictines in 966, a Romanesque style abbey was soon built and it became a key centre for pilgrimages and learning.
